Breaking News: How Tradies Can Benefit From The Latest Announcement from Google…

Google has certainly shaken up the industry…and for good reason.

Google’s drastic act in removing all its non-core activities from the Google brand seems like a sensible move… when you stop and think about it.
Especially when you read CEO, Larry Page’s blog post in which he explains the rationale behind the decision of new umbrella company Alphabet.

The changes don’t affect the core of the Google business as we know it. The Google business remains primarily an advertising company, generating most of its revenue and nearly all of its profit when people click ads in search results. The Google business still includes search, advertising, maps, YouTube, Android and the data centres and networks.

What the announcement of Alphabet has done is to open the lid on transparency on the number of ‘blue sky’ projects including self-driving cars, bringing internet connectivity to remote areas of the world and Calico, a business focused on diseases associated with old age, to name a few. We’re sure the investors are happy there are no more blurred lines!

The Wall Street Journal explained the split of companies well in their article containing an image called the ‘ABC’s of Google’.

All this aside, what, if anything, does this have to do with tradies? Great question.
Personally, I think there are three lessons in here…

Firstly, Get Uncomfortable.
If you want to make positive change in your business then STOP doing the things you did yesterday, and start doing something that makes you get outside your comfort zone. Something new. Something innovative.

Larry Page said: “We’ve long believed that over time companies tend to get comfortable doing the same thing, just making incremental changes. But in the technology industry, where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant”.

It’s important that we tradies are the same in our thinking and never fall into the trap of being complacent in our business. Get uncomfortable.

And Secondly, Greater Focus
When it comes to the new umbrella company ‘Alphabet’, it’s perhaps too early too say what affect this will have on us tradies when it comes to our marketing efforts with Google. That said, one thing is for certain, even Larry Page is excited about ‘Making Google even better through greater focus’.

Stay tuned!

And thirdly, a Better Business Model.

As your trade business grows there comes a time you need to stop and look within. Perhaps you’ve always known something isn’t quite right but haven’t been able to put your finger on it. Sometimes it’s simply a case of being ‘too close’ to the issue yourself, or that you ‘just don’t know what you don’t know’.
Either way, getting the right business model is critical to success. Larry Page was conscious to make the change he knew had to happen. Are you?

If you think you’re business model is preventing you from making more money, eating at your time and causing you stress, or simply making you feel like an ‘employee’ instead of the ‘boss, then join us for the ‘Tradie Revolution’. We’ll set the record straight…..
