Delegation: the key to trade business productivity and profits

One of the best things about being a trade business owner is you have complete control over every decision and every task involved in running the business. You have way too much to do and not enough time to do it. This is where delegation comes in. By delegating work and authority to your staff, you create an extension of yourself.

Delegating tasks to your staff might cause a bit of a headache in the beginning. Staff may not know exactly how each task you delegate to them is done. If you have the right systems in place, you can drastically reduce this headache. In the end, if utilised, delegation produces great results for not only yourself and your business, but also your staff!

Here are 4 benefits of successful delegation:

1. More time to focus on the bigger picture

Allocating tasks you don’t need to do personally helps in reducing your work load. This gives you more time to focus on more important areas, such as business planning and analysis. What we call profit-producing tasks. Concentrating your energy on critical issues of concern will increase the effectiveness of the business as a whole.

2. Empowers your team

When you delegate tasks to your staff, you are giving them the opportunity to excel. It’s through delegation that your staff will gain a feeling of importance. Once they feel they are valued, they will be more likely to complete tasks to the best of their ability. This motivation is the source of job satisfaction and when you have happy employees, you get positive results.

3. Fosters efficiency

When a certain task is delegated to a staff whose skills are better match for the work, the overall efficiency of the business improves. If it takes you one hour to analyse outstanding payments, takes staff member A two hours, and staff member B half-an-hour, it’s a no brainer who you would give the task to.

4. Strengthens the organisation

Delegation creates an organisational hierarchy, which is essential in establishing a system of responsibility. This way, there are no blurred lines of what employees are responsible for and employees need to take ownership of not their work. With this in place, staff will become more self-reliant.

On top of that, communication between yourself as the business owner and staff is improved. You will need to be clear with what task belongs to who, and your expectations on that person… ultimately fostering a company culture that values communication.

So now it’s up to you. What can you delegate that’ll not only free up your time, but also allow your employees to flourish whilst helping your business grow?
