Are you in a bit of a foul mood like Jan’s boss right now? If you’re struggling to adapt to the new normal, you’re not alone. COVID-19 has thrown a spanner in the works, and we’re all learning to live life in a different way. The thing is, you’ve got two choices: be uptight or upbeat.
Our families and employees need us to show up more than ever before. This is your window of opportunity. It’s about providing confident leadership in how to best navigate the many complex challenges on the road ahead. But your head’s got to be in the game.
For tradies in business, here are 4 ways to improve your mood.
(Get started by watching the classic Not Happy, Jan? ad.)
1. Exercise, exercise, exercise
With our regular routines turned upside down, don’t let the closure of your gym or local sporting club sideline your fitness goals. Stay motivated by taking up an online workout or get out for a run (remember, social distancing and the two-person rule). Your physical and mental health depends on you moving. Now’s not the time to throw in the towel.
2. Master working remoting
Under the current stage three shutdown, tradespeople are still operating in people’s homes. However, the humble in-person toolbox meeting is no longer possible. Consistent connection is good for everyone’s mood, including yours. It’s important to get virtual toolbox meetings going to keep the team on track and humming in this ever-changing situation.

3. Self-motivation is your friend
When the going gets tough, the difference between you and your competitors is self-motivation. It’s what you do when no one is watching. Are you a get-sh*t-done type of trade business owner or will you fold like wet cardboard like many of your competitors because it’s all too hard? Your business’s success on the flipside will rely on how self-motivated you are.

4. Think about your body language
Your body language is how you exude confidence, even when you don’t feel it. If you come across as energised and upbeat, you’re likely to uplift the people around you. Body language expert, Dr Louise Mahler, recently presented to our Lifestyle Tradie members. Watch her body language videos to help nail your body language as a leader.
We’re all riding this unprecedented wave. Are you going to approach it with an uptight attitude like Jan’s boss or put your best mood forward?
